Why Video Games Do Nothing For Me
By Lisa Angelettie
I actually cannot remember the year, but one Christmas my parents a.k.a. Santa Claus bought me a brand new Atari video game system. There was a very rudimentary and boring game that game with the system, but there was one game that everybody was playing that you had to buy separately which was called "frogger". I was excited. I thought I had graduated into a new world, free from Barbies and science kits, and into the world of the "cool" kids. Who played video games at home. I sat on the shag-green carpeted floor of my childhood bedroom, in front of a very large RCA television, and patiently waited for my dad to hook up my new toy. As I was a huge reader and very meticulous about doing things properly, I read the instructions while he simply tried to just "figure out" how to connect it to my television. When my dad was finished, I took the little black cartridge and shoved it into the slot. It was time to play! How exciting it was to hear that same musical loop played over and over while I hoped from one funny looking moving log to another. After about 15 minutes, I was done. I finally fell in the water for the last time and needless to say I was bored. I got up and went to my bookshelf, and pulled out one of my favorite Judy Blume novels, flopped myself tummy-side down on my canopy bed and read for the next 60 minutes. Video games do nothing for me. They never did and they still don't. Wii, nintendo, whoever -- it doesn't matter. My toy of choice is an electronic ebook reader (Kindle). Because with books I get to escape to an exciting, motivational, or romantic place which satisfies something to my core that a video game never has or never will.

Contributor's Note
"My atari game system collected dust on the shelf under my television for the next several years until my TV died. It was then I convinced my mom that it was time to finally throw it away!"
