Do Children Still Play With Jigsaw Puzzles?

By Lisa Angelettie

When I was a child in the 1970s, I played with a lot of different toys to keep myself busy. I was an only child, so it was easy to get a little lonely and bored. One thing sure to keep me busy was one of my jigsaw puzzles that I had received as a Christmas present. I usually received about 4 puzzles every holiday.

My mom (okay Santa:) would buy me really difficult 1000 piece puzzles when I was very young - probably so she could cook dinner without interuption:)

I really enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and of course now that I am older and have children, realize that they were great mental exercises and probably attributed to some memory improvement and ability in my classes.

Knowing that -- why don't my own children do jigsaw puzzles? I bought all those great wooden puzzles for them when they were toddlers, but I think they do not use the ones I use to play with because:

1. They have never seen me do one. So they do not have a chance to model it.

2. Because none of their friends play with them.

3. Because they don't use them for "rainy days" at school recess

Hey, I'm not totally sure, but I have decided to make a run to the store and buy a couple of puzzles. Maybe I'll end up doing them all on a rainy day - but hopefully I'll get the kids hooked:)

Hi,Great Job! I still have a few of my favorite in the storage room. One thing I didn't like about the jigsaw puzzle was the space it took up. Now, I do jigsaw puzzles on the computer. I can use my own pictures too. I like it .. it sure is fun. If you fail to interest your children in the cardboard "real" jigsaw puzzles, perhaps they will be interested in the computer type.

Would you believe I didn't even know they had those on the computers. I will take a look at that. Thanks:)

Here is a suggestion mom. Make a jigsaw puzzle out of a picture of them or something they like doing. The end will justify the means so to speak.

Here is a puzzle I made from My dog Marley with Santa Claus. Just click on the link below the puzzle and then click on the jigsaw picture link, upload a photo, then click order prints. I added the imbed code to my webpage.

They suggest for good quality please upload photo that is at least 1400 x 1000 pixels.

Of course if the price is out of your budget print the picture out and give them some safety scissors to cut the lines out themselves.

Hmmm that's a great idea. They love themselves - so maybe a picture of them at the beach:)

Thank you for sharing, Lisa. We enjoy making puzzles with the grandchildren. It gets them away from the electronics!!
Best wishes.

Thanks so much Frederick. I'm going to work on it!

Speaking of electronics Frederick, I just made a puzzle that uses batteries.

What is nice about this is you can sneak the link to grandparents and they can buy it as a unique one of a kind birthday or Christmas present and then help your kids put it together.

Your kids will marvel at what expert jigsaw puzzle assemblers you parents are and the chatter during the process between kids and grand kids will make it an enjoyable experience.

This Intel is really good. I enjoyed puzzles while I was young and I enjoy them now as an adult child.
